PETALING JAYA: MIC is confident its candidates will win all the nine parliament and 19 state seats it is contesting, although it is faced with a stiff challenge this time. Party secretary-general Datuk K.V.S Subramaniam said yesterday the anti-MIC and anti-government sentiments that have been fuelled has "heated up" their campaigning.
"The people's feelings have been riled up, especially in the northern states, where our candidates are on the receiving end,"he said.
Subramaniam said not much "heat" is being felt by MIC candidates in the southern states compared to their colleagues in the north.
"The Opposition are taking advantage of the situation by distributing pamphlets and VCDs on temple demolitions and other issues. People tend to get emotional and it does affect our campaigning,"he said.
He said they had to "neutralise" these issues by meeting the people personally and explaining to them the true picture of things that have been "twisted" by the irresponsible parties.
"We have to work harder to tackle pockets of antagonised and agitated people who refuse to listen to our explanations,"he said.
MIC, Subramaniam said, had been taking for granted the Indian community's support towards the party and BN in the previous general election.
Asked if the party anticipated failures in defending some of the seats, Subramaniam said they are being optimistic rather than feeling gloomy about a possible setback. "We wouldn't want to pretend everything is alright. Maybe we will only receive 70% to 90% support this time. But we will still win, maybe with a smaller margin,"he said. Subramaniam pointed the fingers at the Opposition for the staging of several "anti-MIC" rallies during the visits to the northern states by party leader Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu. He said the candidates in the southern states are generally doing well.
